Come to NMSEA’s Solar Flea Market for equipment bargains

September 7, 2010

Come to NMSEA's Solar Flea Market for equipment bargains New Mexico’s Solar Fiesta will be happening on September 11th and 12th.  During the Solar Fiesta the New Mexico Solar Energy Association (NMSEA) will be holding a Solar Flea Market.

The Solar Flea Market will be different than other flea markets by offering working used solar equipment.  Like other flea markets, most of the equipment will be used but still in working order.  None of the equipment will come with a warranty.

"As in any flea market or yard sale, nothing sold will come with a warranty, nor is there a return policy," said NMSEA President Monte Oghdal, "but for those with solar experience or a strong do-it-yourself orientation, there will be bargains."

Oghdal continued: "To our esteemed colleagues, we say, ‘Let’s all clean house to help fund solar education in New Mexico.’" Those wishing to donate should contact Gary Vaughn, GVaughn@q.com, in the Albuquerque area, or Monte Ogdahl, solpwr@plateautel.net.

NMSEA members will get 10 percent off on purchases.

This year is the Solar Fiesta’s 10th anniversary.  The name is slightly misleading as the Event includes more than just Solar information and education.  The Solar Fiesta covers other forms of renewable energy along with various forms of solar energy installations.  There will be  “exhibits and workshops about passive solar design, wind and solar electric systems, solar heating and cooling, alternative fuels and vehicles, solar cooking, rainwater catchment, and sustainable building materials, such as strawbale, bamboo and adobe.”

Along with learning about solar installations, you can pick up some equipment that will let you work on different types of installations without forking over a lot of money.  The used equipment offered at the Solar Flea Market may even provide enough solar energy to let you wait until the newer less expensive equipment hits the market.  Don’t hold your breath waiting for it though.

Solar cells and installation equipment have improved greatly over the last decade.  The pace of solar improvements is increasing and methods of producing less expensive, more efficient solar products is as well.  I would like to say that we will see the new products hitting the shelves later this year but that is only a pipe dream.  Most of the solar advances won’t hit the market for two to five years so picking up some used equipment may be the perfect patch until it gets here.
