Secret Energy Turbine is a wind turbine to please the neighbors
Secret Energy Turbine or SET is a wind turbine designed to generate power and please the neighborhood. The design by Rupert Sweet-Escott, is attractive and allows the turbine to run silently. The chimney pot look and silent performance should keep neighbors from complaining.
SET uses a vertical axis method similar to the WePower wind turbines in use in Walt Disney World’s Epcot center. Rather than looking like a windmill, SET’s blades are straight up and down and revolve in a circle with the power of the wind. The turbine is considered levitated with the aid of two opposing magnets and a fly wheel. Once the turbine blades begin to rotate they quickly gain speed as they become an airfoil converting 40 percent of the wind’s power to electricity. This makes for a very powerful wind turbine that works with winds as low as eight miles per hour.
The turbines come in three different sizes. The 300 mm SET generates between 2 – 600 watts from wind speeds ranging from 8 – 40 mph. The 400 mm version generates from 6 – 1000 watts depending on the same wind speeds. The largest SET, 500 mm, will produce 10 – 2000 watts in winds ranging from 8 –40 mph. The turbines are designed to be scalable so that you can have one to four SETs on your roof depending on your household needs.
TPS Visual Communication is using SETs to power its LED outdoor signs. These signs are called the ECO-ADlite. They are stand alone units that generate their own energy using an SET positioned on the top of the display pole. Since the displays don’t need to be connected to any power source other than the built in SET, they can be placed anywhere. Specialty ECO-ADlites are being designed for use at music festivals and other temporary events.
The roof SETS come in three colors: cream, terracotta, and black. One of those three should either blend in with your roof or complement it. SETs are not cheap so you will want to be careful with your energy need estimates. Just like every other wind turbine or solar array, you will need to purchase an inverter and batteries if you want to store power for use in less windy conditions. Of course inverters and batteries are not cheap either so you will need to be prepared to pay for all the pieces and the installation as well.
