Filing your taxes online is the green way to go

February 15, 2010

Filing your taxes online is the green way to go Filing your taxes online, also known as, e-filing, is the green way of filing your taxes.  Of  course there are some who need to use the services of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) to file their taxes, but for everyone else, e-filing saves time, paper, printer ink and hopefully stress.

We have indeed entered that dreaded time of year when W2s, 1099s, 1098s, and other miscellaneous tax forms start arriving in the mail.  Commercials for walk-in and online tax services are hitting the airwaves raising anxiety levels and blood pressure.

Some people like to be walked through the process by another human being and still have the option to e-file.  You can find services like H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, Liberty Tax Service, Instant Tax Service, and even the IRS who provide both a store front service and online filing.  The IRS offers help to low income and elderly filers through volunteers and its tax counseling services all for free.

One of the most popular tax preparation software for both your computer and online, is TurboTax where you can get different levels of online service.  Everything from individual tax return to business returns can be completed online and e-filed.  Cost of course, varies with the services you decide to utilize.

TurboTax is not the only online preparer.  The tax services mentioned above also offer services online as do several online only services like TaxActTaxbrain, E-Smart, and FreeTaxUSA.  As with TurboTax, different levels of online service are available at various price points.  Depending on your situation, you can pay from $0-$129.95.  Virtually all of them have guarantees that your returns will be accurate and that you will get the biggest refund possible.  Some even offer over the phone access to CPAs for answers to questions and audit support.

Everyone’s circumstances are different, but for the majority of tax payers e-filing is simple and any refund expected, comes more quickly.
