YoGen’s green hand charger makes traveling simpler
A number of different hand chargers have hit the market within the last few years as more and more people have embraced the concept of going “green”. Solar power, wind power, and muscle power seem to be the renewable energy sources of choice for repowering everything from your iPod to your laptop. YoGen has entered the fray with its own take on muscle power that just might tempt you to give up the hand crank.
YoGen works differently than most of the hand powered portable chargers. We’ve all seen the hand crank chargers for cell phones and other small portable devices. YoGen does away with the crank and uses a flywheel and pull string.
The YoGen has either a top T-handle that fits into the unit. When you want to charge your handheld gadget you pull on the T-handle which pulls the cord which turns the flywheel that generates the energy. Simple really, but the flywheel mechanism and T-handle cord pull require less energy than the hand crank models making it less tiring to use.
The website likens the pull of the T-handle to using a yo-yo but it is actually more like starting a lawnmower or outboard engine. Pulling the cord starts the charging with the energy of throwing a yo-yo.
The YoGen is small enough to fit in your pocket or purse. It uses a mini USB cord to charge electronics and has tips for most phones. An LED display shows the charge being delivered from the YoGen to the device.
Since all hand powered charging devices require continuous cranking or pulling for five minutes or more, the YoGen may prove easier to use for the same amount of charge.
If you decide to buy one, the only place to get it is from their store. Although the website shows the chargers as yellow and silver, the store only offers clear and black.
