The Cool-ER ebook reader gives you color choices
I have a friend who buys her cars by the color. If I weren’t there to make sure it had other important elements like a decent engine, ABS brakes, and air conditioning, she’d take whatever car fell in her color scheme. If you have someone who buys by the color rather than the features, you want them to look at the Cool-ER because it has both decent features and great color choices.
The Cool-ER (Cool Ebook Reader) by Interead, has features similar to the Kindle, Nook, and Sony ereaders. It will read several formats: Epub, PDF, FB2, RTF, TXT, HTML, and PRC. You can view JPG format pictures and listen to MP3 music and audio books. The design is simple and easy to use.
This ereader uses E-Ink Vizplex for its six inch screen but it only uses eight levels of grayscale rather than sixteen like the Kindle. The case is sturdy plastic and comes in eight different colors: red, blue, green, hot pink, pale pink, black, silver, and violet. Surely one will appeal to your aesthetic sense.
At 78 grams (2.75 ounces) this is the lightest ereader on the market. It has 1G of storage and 128 MB of memory. It can hold about 800 books and you can add thousands more with a 4G SD memory card. The COOLEREBOOKS online ebook store boasts over a million books which is more than Barnes & Noble or Amazon claim.
Currently the Cool-ER doesn’t have wireless so you have to download the books to your computer and load them on to the device from there. The next generation Cool-ER should have wireless capabilities, but that won’t be available until mid 2010. Interead designed the Cool-ER to be easy to use and affordable if you find $249.00 affordable. OK it is more affordable than all but two of Sony’s ereaders.
The Cool-ER should fill the wishes of the buy-it-by-the-color person on your holiday shopping list. If you want an ebook reader with more color choices and decent features this may be the one you’re looking for. Waiting until mid 2010 will net you an ereader with more features but who knows if the price will stay the same.
Compare this reader to the Barnes & Noble Nook and the Kindle and Sony ereaders that you can find here. The New York Times has a comparison chart here. If you want an ereader with decent features, lighter than the others and with a more colorful case, you can order it here.
